Vulture’s picks for the Bests, Worsts, and Other Superlatives From the Year in Entertainment

Best Sweater: Q, Skyfall
Which came first, Q’s comfy-cozy sweater or his magazine-messy cascade of brown hair? Answer this correctly and we will snuggle with it.

Vulture clearly doesn’t know its cardies. The Hardigan is the baddest ass sweater in the history of cinematic knitwear.

…by far the most intriguing is Forrest (Tom Hardy), the Bondurant brothers’ notional leader, a bear-like man with a mesmerising gaze just below a tall, broad-rimmed hat….

The running joke about Forrest is that he’s indestructible, and Hardy portrays him with a subtle sense of fun. When he speaks at all, it’s indistinctly; mostly he emits low, animal grunts with meanings that require guesswork. He also favours a baggy, earth-toned cardigan: it’s ghastly, yet implausibly renders him even more endearing.

Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and opens your heart and it means someone can get inside and mess you up. You build up all these defenses. You build up a whole wall of armor for years, so nothing can hurt you. Then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life. You give them a piece of you. They don’t ask for it. They do something dumb one day like kiss you, or smile at you, and then your life isn’t your own anymore.   - Neil Gaiman

The story is that [The Dark Knight Rises]—beefing up for it—immediately preceded Lawless, so Hardy is carrying a good deal more weight than might have been likely in dirt-poor Virginia in 1931. He is beefy, over-fed and sleepy, but somehow Hardy is good enough to turn these liabilities into sultry assets.

He walked out of there and married Maggie. Neither of them told no one. I only found out years later. He was like that, Forrest.

“‘How can somebody be so violent, yet at the same time be such a little boy? Someone intrinsically innocent and naive and have such a heart, but then he’d do something on the other side that was so incredibly, horrifically horrible.” - Tom talking about Forrest

John Hillcoat: […] one of the ideas I love about [Jessica Chastain’s] character is that she’s more powerful than even Forrest, Tom Hardy’s character. Forrest bought into his own myth and she could see right through it. She also has to carry this terrible secret to protect Forrest. Because she knew what it would do to him, and what path he would then go on if it ever came out.
